Understanding & Applying Discipline
Core Covenant 3: Being Disciplined –
Discipline is involved in all team success. Athletically, it is best defined as focused attention and effort. That kind of discipline allows an individual to do what they have been trained to do as well as possible every time, and develops the “I can depend on you” type of team trust. In order to be successful – either individually or collectively - sacrifices involving discipline must be made. An athlete and teammate not only accepts discipline, but they embrace it for the benefit of the group. Disciplined athletes do whatever is necessary concerning work habits, enthusiasm, controlled emotion and personal responsibility. Great competitors find a way to channel their emotions and energy to lift their own performance, as well as the teams. Discipline
equals training and choices that make punishment unnecessary and focused performance possible.

Questions for athletes:
- Do you understand which disciplines come with your sport of choice?
- Can you accept them?
- Do you embrace them?
- Are you able to focus your energy, attention and effort for the entire practice?
- Do you demonstrate team discipline when you are away from the team?
- Can you be disciplined to continue your "training" outside of your "team time"?
- Can you be disciplined when something challenging arises during competition?
